Hello everyone. I don’t know about you, but I recently got an email from George at Velogames, telling me that it’s Fantasy Vuelta time. I know you’re probably suffering from post-Olympic withdrawal, so what better way to cheer yourself up, than to pick a team and follow your boys on their merry way around Spain? It may be the ginger-stepchild of the Grand Tours, but the Vuelta is still a good race, and there’s a quality field this year. Seeing as no-one in Spain has a job these days, the crowds could be big too.
I like to play my cards close to my chest, but in a break with tradition, and to help out those of you who don’t know who the fuck some of these guys are, here’s my form guide to every single rider on the Fantasy Tour start sheet. But please bear in mind that I don’t know who the fuck some of these guys are either.

Team Saxo Bank

He's back from his 2 year/a couple of months ban, what can he do? On the one hand, he's the best stage racer in the world by a mile. On the other hand, he's not had many race miles recently, as his ban only ended last week.
Christopher FROOME
Sky
18
The Froome-Dog was super strong at the Tour. Many would say he's a better climber than Wiggins, and he's no slouch against the clock either. It just depends on how tired he is after the Tour and Olympics, if he's still got good legs, then he should at least be able to repeat his second place of last year.
Denis MENCHOV
Katusha
16
Past it. Had a crappy Tour, and I can't see why the Vuelta should go any better. He's got a fair few skeletons in his cupboard as well, but has so far eluded a ban.
Robert GESINK
Rabobank
16
I like Robert. He can climb, but he does have a habit of always falling off, making him a risky pick.
Juan Jose COBO
Movistar
14
To say Cobo is inconsistent would be putting it mildly. He's not showed any form yet this year, but you could've said the same thing about him last year, and he won.
Alejandro VALVERDE
Movistar
14
He's not had much success in Grand Tours since he stopped keeping spare bags of blood in a garage. He might be good for a stage win or two.
Rigoberto URAN
Sky
12
Riggy should be up there with the big boys on the climbs. Looked good at the Giro, but had some off days, and may have to do a lot of work for Froome.
Thomas DE GENDT
Vacansoleil
12
He's a dark horse. His ride in the last week of the Giro was quality and he finished 3rd overall. He might find himself a marked man though.
Arnold JEANNESSON

Some French dude. Vestan's 1st law of Fantasy Cycling, 'Never pick a Frenchie'*
Nicolas ROCHE
AG2R La Mondiale
8
Did a solid Tour ride and usually goes pretty well at the Vuelta, but he's usually a top 10 kind of guy, and never really earns as many points as you think he will
Maxime MONFORT
Radioshack - Nissan
8
May quite possibly be French, but had a pretty good Tour. Suffered on the big climbs though, and his team is a shambles
Climbers

Joaquím RODRÍGUEZ
Katusha

We all like J-Rod. He's a punchy climber for sure. And he doesn't suck at time trialing as much as he used to
Jurgen VAN DEN BROECK

Lotto - Belisol

18
Fourth in the Tour ain't bad. Should do well if he stays out of trouble
Igor ANTON
Euskaltel
14
Looked to have a top finish in the bag in 2010, then he crashed. He sucked in 2011, not done much this season either
Bauke MOLLEMA
Rabobank
14
Another plucky Dutchman. Bauke did well for me at the Vuelta last year, 4th overall and the points jersey. Crashed in the Tour (like most of Rabobank) and he hasn't had good results since
Damiano CUNEGO
Lampre - ISD
10
The Little Prince' might be good for a stage win, hasn't done well on GC in several years though
Nairo QUINTANA
Movistar
10
Quite the up and coming climber, could go well. He rode away from the mighty Team Sky at the Dauphine
Sergio HENAO
Sky
10
Sky Columbian youngster showed his talent at the Giro. Should be up there with the big boys on the climbs
John GADRET
AG2R La Mondiale
8
Baldy French Climber' Gadret didn't really repeat his Giro success of 2011. Maybe he'll show something at the Vuelta. I wouldn't expect to see him burying himself to help Roche
David MONCOUTIE
Cofidis
8

He's won the Vuelta mountains jersey a ton of times. He's getting a bit long in the tooth now though

Beñat INTXAUSTI
Movistar
6
Not bad, but likely to be on domestique duties
Vasili KIRYIENKA
Movistar
6
He's not won a Grand Tour stage yet this year, and he's usually good for one. Probably on a tough day in the mountains, so points aplenty
Laurens TEN DAM
Rabobank
6
Hard as nails, but will be riding for others
Sprinters
| |||
Jose Joaquin ROJAS
Movistar

12

A good sprinter, but didn't do much at the Tour against the really big boys this year
Daniele BENNATI
Radioshack - Nissan
12
He used to be the man, but that was several years ago. I can't remember the last time he won a sprint
John DEGENKOLB
Argos - Shimano
8
The young German is fast for sure, and he should get some chances as team-mate Kittel isn't riding
Angel VICIOSO
Katusha
8
Not bad, but he's never had a big win
Francisco Jose VENTOSO
Movistar
8
Maybe faster than Rojas on the flat finishes, not so good uphill though
Matti BRESCHEL
Rabobank
8
A handy classics rider, but not really one for a bunch gallop
Ben SWIFT
Sky
8
He's no Cav, but Swifty is pretty quick. Not sure he'll get much of a leadout though
Manuel BELLETTI
