Fantasy Vuelta Stage 3: Valv Piti Pips Purito by Pecometers

The Vuelta isn’t messing about this year. We’ve had a team time trial, we’ve had a sprint stage, and that was all the warm up the peloton was allowed before they got sent up the Arrate at the end of today’s stage.

Alberto Contador isn’t messing about this year either. He’s obviously out to prove something after the injustice of having to serve a not very long ban, for having not a lot of Clenbuterol in his urine.  And when the road went up, he set about thinning things out a bit with a series of attacks.

Yesterday I told you that the eventual race winner would probably be in the top ten today. Well, now I reckon they were probably in the top four, as it was only Bertie, J-Rod, Froome-Dog and Valverde who looked like they’ll have the legs in the coming weeks. Coming out on top today was Alejandro Valverde.....just.

He’s always up for a stage win on a tough finish, but can he really be bothered to try and win the whole thing? He’s got the Red Jersey for now, but he usually has a bad day or two and he can’t time trial either. Still the race lead does seem to have its perks.

Looking down the fantasy teams, it seems that the three-pronged attack of Contador, Froome and Rodriguez is a popular choice. There should be a few of you who did nicely for points today, but until the scores are in we can't be sure. At a guess, I'm going to say that the Bile Beans still rule. Scores up as soon as I see 'em.

Another tough day tomorrow, especially as it has been super hot out there in Spain this week. We should see Movistar working on the front again defending that Red Jersey, they might let a break get away though, and take some of the pressure off. I’m not sure they’ll be wanting to defend the lead for three weeks.
